Summary

This is a project designed for the Alberta High School curriculum course FAS2160: Creating Accessories 2. The project has students design their own fashion accessories digitally and then use a 3D printer to make them real.

How I Designed This

I designed both part of this pendant in Blender 2.74.

Project: Accessory Design

Objectives:

Students will:

Design and print a fashion accessory of their design and choosing
Submit a short paper explaining how their design and 3D printing fit into the fashion industry

Audiences:

This project is designed specifically for the Alberta High School curriculum course FAS2160: Creating Accessories 2. Students in this course who have digital design experience may pursue project this as an avenue of design.

describe the creativity, wearability and marketability of an accessory
apply knowledge and skills related to design elements and construction techniques to create a fashion accessory
apply skills at an appropriate level in creating and assembling a fashion accessory
identify copyright restrictions and permissions and put them into practice

Preparation:

Students who wish to pursue this project need access to a 3D printer as well as appropriate design software. My recommendations are ZBrush or Blender, though these are not the only viable design software for this project. Prior experience with digital design is a plus.

Steps:

The student will:
1) Research the product they wish to design and propose it to the teacher.
2) Design the accessory in the appropriate software
3) Print and finish (paint, attach, etc.) the accessory
4) Describe their process and legal findings with a short summary and screenshots of their process

Results:

The students will produce a fashion accessory and a rationale into where it fits into the industry, as well as the design and manufacturing process. For example, where are 3D printers used in fashion? Is this a viable use of technology?

The .stl file I designed and corresponding images can be used as exemplars for this project. Students are by no means limited to pendants, but anything that they can come up with (with the teacher's permission).
I highly recommend that students keep screenshots of their progress to minimize the likelihood of plagiarism.
