i3 Spool holder

I was having some issues with tension on my spool and extruder while printing with the spool on rollers at or below the extruder height. I decided to make an inexpensive spool holder that sat above the extruder but didn't put all of the weight on the printer or modify the printer frame. This was my solution. Copper pipe is affordable and easily obtainable, this could also likely be done with PVC if you keep the O.D. of the pipe below 24mm, otherwise these models would require modification. I used my makerfarm i3 8" to design the pipe fitting, this model may need to be changed for 6" models. Distance between centers of these screws needs to be ~35.42mm to fit w/o modification.

Parts required

  • 1x 5' Hard Copper Pipe 3/4" I.D. used here, though a slightly smaller or larger size should work. You can most likely get 5' sections at your local hardware store, I got mine from homedepot. You'll need to cut this pipe into 3 sections of varying lengths depending on how you plan to orient the clamp and i3 pipe fitting.
  • 2x 90 degree 3/4" copper elbows
  • 1x M8 Bolt (mine was 50mm long, depends on your mounting surface)
  • 1x M8 Nut
  • 2x M6 Screws (20mm long, used to hold pipe in clamp)
  • Non-slip drawer lining (optional to prevent the clamp from sliding on smooth surfaces)

Printables (PLA, printed at 0.3mm layer height with 0.2 honeycomb infill)

  • 2x Spool Holder Clamp
  • 1x i3 Pipe Fitting
