This is a simple tool that will draw out a sine wave as you roll it across paper.

For my parts, I had to use sand paper to get the pen holder to fit onto the gear with little friction. Sand paper may be needed in other places as well.

Objectives

            <div><p>Seeing how a sine wave could be drawn in a more physical/mechanical way has helped me as a student to understand it, and I hope to help others understand it too.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Audiences</strong></p>            <div><p>Anyone starting trigonometry, or anyone else interested.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Preparation</strong></p>            <div><p>Students should know how a graph works, such as what the X and Y axis are and what functions are.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Steps</strong></p>            <div><p>First, you attach the wheel and the gear to the frame, in no particular order, using the pins. Pin 1 is for the gear, and pin 2 is for the wheel.<br>Next, you clip on the pen holder, such that the holder is on top of the gear and will move with it when rotated.<br>Finally, you may or may not want to add a rubber band around the wheel to help with friction.<br>After all the assembly is done, you simple put in a writing utensil (pens and sharpies work best), and then you push it across paper so that the pen draws across it.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Results</strong></p>            <div><p>Students, with the help of teachers, should have a more visual and tactile way of understanding the sine wave. It wouldn't be used as a grade, but more as a fun and quick way to demonstrate what the sine wave actually is.</p></div>
