Summary

Coronene is a chemical compound, a highly symmetrical example of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Such chemicals are found in the interstellar medium, but their detailed chemistry is not well understood. These models were made for a friend who studies coronene ions under laboratory conditions in an effort to better understand what's happening between the stars.

How I Designed This

The molecular modelling tool Chimera is designed for much more complicated molecules, for example proteins, but is perfectly capable of modelling coronene. The two models are based on two visualization settings: one simply places a sphere of appropriate diameter at the position of each atom, while the other attempts to model the solvent-excluded region of the molecule.
