            <div><p>“Project: City Planning”</p><p>o   ○  Objectives: To be able to read a map, a student must practice finding points on and using a coordinate grid.  This lesson will allow that.</p><p>○  Audiences:  lesson is targeted at 3-5.  In grade 3 social studies dictates that we learn basic reading of a map.  Grades 4-5 then go more in depth.  Grade 5 also begins plotting points and using a coordinate grid in math.</p><p>Subjects: social studies and math</p><p>Skills Learned (Standards):<br>Grade 3:<br>A.4.5. Performance Standard:<br>Use atlases, databases, grid systems, charts, graphs, and maps to gather information about the local community, Wisconsin, the United States, and the world.</p><p>Prep/Materials:<br>You will want to print the 3d buildings and streets linked to this lesson.  Also, label them on the bottom so that each student is referring to them as the same thing.  You will want 2 sets of buildings for each partnership.  Coppies will need to be printed of the sheets for day 3-6.  If you put treasure hunt in sheet protectors, you can reuse the same sheet and pass it between partners by writing on it with a dry erase marker.<br>Suggested: teacher device with ability to project</p><p>○  Lesson/Duration:<br>Day 1-2: Get kids excited with watching this video <a rel="nofollow" href="https://youtu.be/LZFF8EuaGjM">https://youtu.be/LZFF8EuaGjM</a> and using google earth, start zoomed completely in on your city.  Then begin to zoom out to your state, and country.  Zoom out to the world and discuss how big the world is…. Help students realize the parts of the earth  Then discuss that in order to get from point a to point b you need to follow a map.  Maps are based on a grid system.  We use that to find places. Place various items on the grid and have students discuss how to label locations of the objects.  Then give each student time with the bag of city buildings and a partner.  Students sit back to back, both with a blank grid in front of them.  Partner one places the buildings on their map.  Then, using only oral location points, students tell their partner where to place streets, buildings, etc.  When they have discussed all locations, students should put their maps side by side to see if they match.  Students not working with the physical buildings can practice their skills with the other sheets found in assets. </p><p>Day 5-6:<br>Work on treasure hunt (in assets) or have kids play battleship</p><p>Day 7:<br>Give students another grid and then a list of coordinates.  This grid may have a couple of things already placed on it.  Students will then need to place buildings on their correct location using the coordinates and label the buildings previously on the grid based on their location.  </p><p>Day 8:<br>DIscuss again how the locations are related to cardinal directions of North, South, West and East.  Then, using a gps locator or a device loaded with a geocaching app, take students to find geocache.  To do this, students will need to follow coordinate points and locate items on a map. </p><p>Possible Extensions:<br>-Have students design a trip and discuss the route they would take and places they would visit using cardinal directions and map locations.<br>-Students could recreate the city/map in Minecraft<br>-Have your class place a cache (by doing so they will have to mark the physical location on the map and work with coordinates as well.) Make this location public so that other people in the area can find it as well!</p></div>
