PSR J0034-0721

This shows 500 individual pulses (about 471 seconds worth of data) of the pulsar J0034-0721 observed on January 19, 2016 with the Murchison Widefield Array telescope. The data were reduced and analyzed by PhD student Sammy McSweeney of Curtin University, in Australia.

This particular pulsar shows long "nulls" (times when no pulses at all are received) and "drifting subpulses" (miniature pulses that move diagonally across the diagram). Both of those phenomena are very poorly understood.

The pulsar rotates every 0.94 seconds, and is about 3000 light-years away in the constellation Cetus
