Summary

The Stomachion is an ancient puzzle that is at least 2,200 years old. It consists of 14 pieces that can be cut from a 12x12 square, as shown in the images. Like tangrams, the object of the Stomachion is to rearrange the pieces to form interesting shapes.

Post-Printing

The pieces are 1 cm thick. Next time, I will probably reduce the thickness to 0.5 cm to save on PLA.

I am pleased with the results of the print. This was my first major design and print.

How I Designed This

I was inspired by an article found on the NCTM website:

I then used Tinkercad to design the puzzle pieces.

As a HS Geometry teacher, I feel there are many opportunities for investigation with this puzzle, from coordinate geometry, using an app like Geogebra to recreate the puzzle with polygons, bisectors and more, exploring congruent and similar figures, and analyzing surface area and volumes.

In addition, the students will be able to explore their creativity by creating their own designs with the pieces.
