Stereotype Clasps
Gender roles are invisible, insidious forces that control so much of our lives, even in modern society. Many people think sexism is over, and that gender roles are old-fashioned, and yet the rigid clasps of masculinity and femininity dictate the courses of many people’s lives, from how they treat others, to how they themselves come to identify. This, however, is only true… If they choose to wear those clasps.
The Stereotype Clasps offer a wearable-artistic response to the harmfulness of rigid gender roles, giving the wearer a sharp stab in the wrist whenever the clasp mechanism is closed. Upon taking off the bracelet, a raised gender symbol leaves a temporary imprint in the skin opposite of the pointy clasp, leaving a reminder of the lasting effects gender roles have, even after they are abandoned.
