In the old days, when batteries were innovations behind the horizon, many interesting moving toys were found under the Christmas tree. The energy was supplied by kids or by gravity.
Some examples of climbing toys that go up are described in

In this thing, we will make a tumbling down the ladder toy. A tumbler climbing down a ladder. The ladder is printed as well. For printing, the ladder is rotated along the z-axis over 45 degrees to position them diagonally on the bed. Make sure the rungs are facing the print bed. The slots in the tumbler should be able to move along the rungs without friction and the rungs have to be able to rotate freely in the cylindrical openings in the tumbler. The tumbler can be decorated with the traditional monkey or, in this case, a smiley.
