Minecraft Wooden Chessboard

This is a simple laser-cut Minecraft chessboard, great for use with 3D-printed chess pieces. The design includes a sword covering the board and characters around the perimeter. Some post-cut work is required.

  1. Setup files for your laser cutter. The SVG file includes red cut lines and greyscale raster images designed for a single job. The lines and images may need to be separated, and the line color/thickness may need to be adjusted for your cutter.

  2. After cutting, number each square as you remove it from the cutter.

  3. Lay everything into position on a table. There will be a gap between the perimeter pieces and the squares due to material loss during cutting. Sand the inside corners of the perimeter pieces to ensure a tight fit.

  4. Stain the perimeter pieces and alternate squares. The lower-left square (1A) should be dark.

  5. Glue everything to a flat base layer such as MDF, taking extra care to spread glue all the way to the edges and corners. A wet brush helps to spread the glue evenly. Clamp until dry.

  6. Apply gloss or top coat as desired.
