Summary

A friend of mine was missing a Knob on his Traktor Kontrol X1 and I suggested to him that I could design a replacement and print it on my 3D Printer.

So far it worked out. We'll see how it stands the test of time with heavy use.

I have included the FreeCAD model. Adjust the sizes as you need them.</p></div>

How I Designed This

General Shape

            <div><p>I started out in the Part Design workbench with a Sketch that I planned to revolve. Most of the dimensionally important parts are defined in there. The only important dimension missing from that sketch is the width of the keying part in the bore that registers the part with the shaft and it's keying cut.</p><p>For more information, check the FreeCAD file.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Keying Part</strong></p>            <div><p>To create the Key, I projected the bore circumference into a sketch I mapped to the bottom of the bore. From there, it was a simple construction of a rectangle with the right dimensions.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Stability and Flex</strong></p>            <div><p>Because the first iteration didnt fit so well, I decided to cut a slot in the bore sleeve. That was done by mapping the important lines into the sketch and constructing a rectangle, which was then pocketed into the part.</p><p>The other parts were two connections from the external hull to the bore sleeve, to keep it from breaking off under heavy use. I don't really expect them to be of great importance, but they also don't detract from the other features of the part.</p><p>I constructed one of them and then mirrored the feature to the other side of the part.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Chamfers</strong></p>            <div><p>Top and bottom were chamfered, to get closer to the original look, while maintaining printability.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Grooves for Grip</strong></p>            <div><p>For this I switched to the Part workbench and made a cylinder in the correct spot and orientation for one of the grooves, and filleted the lower edge to mimic the look of the original part. This will be the tool I use to cut out from the main body.</p><p>Then I switched to the Draft workbench where I used the pattern feature (polar) to distribute 16 of the cylinders around the part. </p><p>This array I then used as the tool in a boolean cut operation (back in the Part workbench) to cut all the grooves.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Done</strong></p>            <div><p>I exported the file as an STL and dragged it into Cura to slice it and then I printed it with bright green PLA.</p></div>
