Summary

After several weeks of research, programming, tinkering and a little frustration, I was finally able to download a picture of a specific region from Geomapapp, convert it to an stl file, and print it on the 3-D printer. I am pretty sure it is Mt Rainier.

Instructions

As I said in the comments section, I am working on a user friendly version for my friend's middle school geology class by March. For now, if you want to make one here is what I did.
1) Download and run GeoMapApp.
2) Get the thing you want to print in your viewing window.
3) Turn off the sun, switch palette to black to white.
4) Select "Save map file as image/grid file" and save as a .png
5) Open .png file in paint and crop the Lat and Long border.
6) Install stl_tools (github) library for python.
7) Use stl_tools to convert the .png to an .stl
8) Print and enjoy.
