Summary

This is a finder scope for locating the sun with your telescope. It is designed to fit the TELRAD finder base. This is perfect for the upcoming eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Acrylic may have an issue with the snap-tabs that hold the ends on, but may work ok. The "red" layer is not to be cut all the way though, it's only a "marking pass". On our 40W 5th Gen I setup the cut like this:</p><p>Vector cut:<br>1 Red - 100% speed, 20% power<br>2 Blue - 20% speed, 100% power<br>3 Black - 20% speed, 100% power</p></div>

Assembly

            <div><p>Connect the ends to the longer piece. Both ends should point "up". Attach the end with the hole so the words face away from the other end. Attach the remaining end. The ends should snap into place, it may take some encouragement to get them to fit.</p></div>

Custom Section

Cutting, usage, warnings, etc.

            <div><p>This piece is designed to be cut out of 1/8" thick material. I have only tested it with baltic birch plywood, any 1/8" hobby/craft wood should work fine. The snap tabs that hold the ends on may not work well with acrylic, but if someone wants to try it then who knows.</p><p>Firstly, NEVER point your telescope towards the sun without an appropriate solar filter fully installed. Also, any other finder scopes must be covered over or removed as well so the sun can not reach them. Attempting to view the sun without a proper solar filter installed will cause PERMANENT BLINDNESS. Additionally, it will likely damage your telescope. The same goes for finder scopes - even if you don't intend to use the optical finder scope, the sun may damage it if you don't cover it up or remove it first.</p><p>The Sol Finder is installed with the "hole" end towards the sun. Install it on your TELRAD base by inserting the bottoms of the ends into the mounting holes of the base. Turn the thumb screws down - note that you will have to make sure the screws make contact with the wood.</p><p>To use: Point towards the sun. You can use the shadow of the front of the finder to do the "rough" alignment, move the telescope around until the shadow completely covers the rear target side (rear) of the finder. A small white dot will appear on the target end, align this to the center of the target. This gives your precise alignment allowing you to line your telescope up with the sun.</p><p>Install, align, view, and enjoy!</p></div>
