Printrbot Simple 2014 Bowden Extruder Conversion

Work in progress

Working on a bowden conversion for the 2014 model of printrbot simple. This mod will take the extruder motor weight off of the Y axis and allow for faster, less shaky prints. The tip of the ubi hot end should be in the same position as before, so the existing fan shroud will still work.

Besides the printed parts, you'll need about $12 in parts ( I got mine from amazon ), some machine screws and some m3 bolts and nuts ( I used some leftover from my printrbot ). Links for the parts on the instructions page.

Feel free to contribute.

Update - 2-21-14

New version of the hot end mount. Fixed some minor fitment issues and lowered the height to reduce the open gap above the hot end.

Update - 2-25-14

First successful print using bowden style print. STLs and SKP files added. Note: Design of the motor mount will differ from the pictures until I can print the new version. ( The files available here are the new version )

Update - 3-2-14

So it seems that the aluminum extruder just can't provide the torque required to support bowden. I'm currently researching some alternatives to easily convert the aluminum bowden to a geared drive.

Update - 4-11-14

I've recently found out that my hotend was damaged, causing the torque issues with my first attempt. A few people have reported the extruder working just fine for them, so this mod should be good to go.

As soon as I get back to this project, I'll update the plate to Include some braces and vents to account for the rising heat from the extruder to prevent it from drooping over time. If anyone else wants to take a stab at that, please feel free.
