Summary

In the tradition of the Moon Shot and the Earth Shot, This is my shot at making a globe of the 2nd Jovian Galilean moon, Europa. It is slightly smaller than our moon but is covered in a fractured ice sheet covering a large (presumed) salt water ocean. It prints perfectly on the Replicator.

Instructions

Similar to my previous heightfield work with the asteroid Vesta (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:12668)and WilliamAAdamas Moon Shot (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14011) and EarthShot (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14070), this is a heightfield mapped on a sphere. I used the enhanced cylindrical map of Europa based on Voyager data (http://solarviews.com/cap/jup/europacyl2.htm) to create a Heightfield in Rhino3D, converted it to a mesh, and used the ApplyMeshUVN command with a value multiplier of 0.1 to map it onto a sphere. (You do this with the math you swore you'd never need again - take the width of the map, divide it by 2*pi and make a sp-here with that radius). Place the sphere centered under the mesh and apply it - except for the poles (which have limited data anyway), the mapping is very good. I did apply a smoothing factor in world coordinates of 0.1 to prevent spikiness. This makes the surface markings subtle but truer to what it actually looks like.

Printed on a Replicator using 3 shells, 0.27 layer thickness, 2% infill, exterior support and scaled to match the Moonshot model.

Per request, I have uploaded an unsmoothed version (Europaglobefine.stl). I have not printed this yet but the mesh seems fine. If someone beats me to printing it, please upload an image.
