Summary

Finally, a salt shaker small enough to fit in my lunch bag or bring on a picnic.

The lid is friction based.

Instructions

I had been wanting to make this kind of salt shaker for years.

The main idea was that it would use up as little space as possible in my lunch bag while remaining useful and functional as a shaker.

My first iteration was with a cap that you removed to shake your salt.

My next iteration had a hole in the cap so that you only needed to pull it up slightly to expose it enough to pour the salt.

Eventually I added discreet side grips to help prevent it falling since my preferred usage method was to tap the top with my finger to pour the salt.

Finally I improved the design with grips to more easily lift the lid, an extra 1x3x1mm thickness at the back of the lid to increase friction, a dip opposing it so that it sits better in place when closed and I scaled the wall thickness of the model so that it printed at just 2 layers.

Tips:

Print with transparent PLA so as to see the contents, salt, pepper.
Print as a different color to reflect the content.
Print only the cap as a different color.

Caution:

I recommend using only dry foods in this salt shaker, whether it be made with PLA or ABS, as those plastics are otherwise not food safe. Please Google for more info.
I also recommend dispensing if having to wash more than a few times, even if only used with dry foods, to avoid possible bacteria buildup. Takes just 20 mins to reprint.

Developed with Sketchup, exported with the STL plugin, GCoded with Slic3r and printed with Repetier on a Prusa i3.
