Duplicate a Model Project

This is a 7th grade project in which the students are given a model and challenged to make an exact copy. This project is part of a unit on astronomy and discussion of a possible mission to Mars. The idea being that 3D printing might be used to create spare parts needed during the mission. it could also be used to assess the student's ability to design a 3D model.
Students will need a tool to measure the part they are duplicating, a ruler, or better yet calipers.
This project was completed with a piece I made resembling a pawn from a chess set. Another model could easily be substituted, easier or harder depending on the skill level of the students. Or the students could be asked to make a spare part for some item in the classroom that is missing or broken.
