Summary

My car was built to be able to have a fan attached to the top of it, and wheels fit on the bottom. The car works by the fan pushing the air towards the back of the car thus causing the car to move forward. The goal of the project was to make the car travel as fast as possible and to measure the kinetic energy of the car.

Overview and Background

                <p class="detail-image"><img src="https://cdn.thingiverse.com/assets/26/3c/44/1e/52/Screen_Shot_2018-06-18_at_2.35.20_PM.png"></p>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Project requirements</strong></p>            <div><p>The car was required to fit within a 6.50cm x 15.00cm x 4.00cm box. The car needed to have sections at equal heights that are 5.80cm apart and at least 1.00cm high located at the front and back in order to put the fan on. There also needed to be 0.35cm wide doorway holes to mount the wheels onto the car, the wheels had to be at least 7.00cm apart and exactly 0.40cm from the bottom edge to the top of the arc. The car had to have a hole that had a diameter of 0.21cm and the hole had to be between 0.40cm and 0.50cm deep in order to accommodate a metal pole. Finally, the back of the car needed to be a flat surface so that the car can be printed standing on the bottom and it couldn't have any upward/inwards curves that would cause the car to tip while printing. </p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Design Process</strong></p>            <div><p>In my original sketch, I made my car just about the exact measurements that were given as the maximum. But when I was designing the car I realized that making them that big was unnecessary and would just add extra unneeded weight to the car. So I ended up making the measurements smaller than they were originally intended to be. Also, I was thinking the fan would be mounted in a different direction which wouldn't work for the design, so when I actually designed my car on Onshape I realized the fan didn't need pop up mounts like it had in the original design and the fan didn't mount on the car sideways, rather I made it so that it mounted going forward/backwards. Finally, in my original design, the hole for the pole was placed in the back of the car although when I was designing the car I realized that there wasn't room in the back so instead I placed it in the front. Other than those changes, for the most part my car stayed true to its original design with the pointed front, harsh corners, and sides gradually getting higher. The design process was longer than expected since using Onshape took some getting used to although it ended up working out. </p></div>
