14xx Brushless Motor Wrench

12/18/2018: V2. I broke my original wrench after several uses, and I've identified the area near the hinge that's weak. I've uploaded version 2 of the STL file where I've reinforced that area.

This is a remix motor wrench that I shrunk down and put in additional reinforcement (now that it's smaller). It fits 14xx brushless motors around the 19mm diameter range, for micro/mini quadcopters. I made this specifically for my HGLRC XJB-145 quad, which uses 1407 3600kv motors. Measure your motors before you print! If you're tired of tearing up your fingers during prop changes, this is your new best friend.

Few notes:

  • It has an imperfect surface in some small areas. Result of me filling in reinforcement from the original file. You're welcome.
  • I used ABS in my Anycubic i3 Mega, nozzle at 240C and Ultrabase bed at 110C. When I finished the print, I cleaned it up, and heated my kitchen oven to 107C. I then put in the wrench pieces (overhanging hinge sides laying down on a pan) for 15 min at that temperature. Then turned the oven off, and let it cool on its own inside the oven. This increases its strength, because you'll want that.
  • I used Brim Adhesion to hold it down while printing, and 100% infill because this is a tool you'll be manhandling. Uses about 4 meters of filament.
  • I had a #6 32 x 1/2 inch machine bolt and nut lying around and it was perfect for the hinges ALTHOUGH I had to use a 1/8 inch drill bit to enlarge the hinge holes (again, too small from the file remix). Since you'll be opening the wrench a lot, use Loc-tite on the bolt tip, and tighten it just enough to be smooth and not loose.
  • To add the necessary gripping force, cut 2 small strips of a flat rubber band and superglue them to the inside wrench surface (check out the photo). You'll be tempted to over-torque your props. Don't.
  • You'll figure out it's better to hold the entire thing in your hand while tightening/removing props. Holding just the handle tips makes it seem a little fragile.
  • I have no idea how long this thing will last if you have gorilla hands. When in doubt, print a back-up!

Happy Flying!
