Dual HDD caddy drive stabilizer
This is a simple brace to stabilize a pair of hard drives mounted in a dual USB docking station. When locked together the two drives form a solid lump with no wobbling.
My docking unit is badged 'Inateck' but I've seen many very similar for sale which I suspect use the same PCB and therefore the same SATA connector spacing so this device will most likely fit these also. Print off 2 stabilizers (a brace of braces?) and attach using standard HDD screws.
My application is a low cost software RAID1 NAS which I use for workstation backup and media storage, connected to an Intel NUC to handle music and video streaming. I'm getting network read and write speeds up to 80MB/s with this configuration.
Downside is slow spin-up from power-save (10 seconds or so) but is immediate once active.
Setting up mirroring using Windows Storage Spaces is simple, however this will only work with Windows 8 or 10 as Win7 doesn't support RAID on USB drives.
