8 triangles puzzle by Jan Aarts.

Ionica Smeets tweeted this puzzle this week. https://twitter.com/ionicasmeets/status/1048490206477910016

There are 4 each of two different triangles.
Use all 8 triangles to form

  • 3 triangles
  • 2 triangles
  • 1 triangle
  • 1 rectangle

I had fun for a few minutes doing the first three challenges and a lot more time for the last one.

Spoiler alert: I think a quick glance at the scad won't give away the solutions, but they are in there. So you can download this, use it to 3D print the pieces, lasercut the pieces or just print it on cardboard and cut it out.

This puzzle was invented by Jan Aarts. I didn't immediately find an english wiki page on him. so this is the Dutch version. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Michael_Aarts

In the openscad model I have changed the color of the rotated and mirrored triangles a bit. This makes the solutions easier to see. Because I used the same rotated versions for the suggested-laser-layout, those look colored too.

When you laser-cut it from acrylic, I suggest you use two different colors for the two different triangles. That's why they are grouped in two mostly rectangular areas so that you can efficiently cut them from a piece of scrap acrylic. Or you can make two complementary puzzles by cutting the whole thing from two colors of acrylic. The 75mm scale factor works nicely for me.
