Summary

My design is a replacement dowel and gear for an antique Victrola Record players. The springs fit on the dowel and the gear on the end winds the springs up. On either end is a screw thread so that you can create a nut to keep it in place and add a handle at the other end.

How I Designed This

Designing

            <div><p>This designed involved a lot of use with a caliper to get precise measurements on the gear, the dowel width and the width of the springs. It also took some trial and error as the 3D printer is slightly off on size. The gear is the hardest part to design. I based mine off of the existing one that I assumes should be of similar shape to the missing one and it worked out well.</p></div>

Custom Section

The biggest problem was designing the gear. There are a lot of online resources for designing gears but those are mostly geared (haha) at someone who is creating a new design altogether because most asked for the RPM. This is something I do not have because I never had this machine working so I am not sure what it would be. If you have this or if you're creating a gear to go in a new design online programs can be very helpful. So from this one mathematical question that arose is determining the RPM of a gear and or the gear in relation to a system of gears in which you have never seen working.
