Simplified Drive Mod for Sewing machine motor
Full Disclosure: Untested
I created this mod to replace the drive components so I could use a spare sewing machine motor I had. Included is a 3" Pulley to reduce for top end lace spinning conventions as my motor was 20,000 RPM at full speed.
Thrift shops and goodwills often have quite a few old sewing machines so this can be quite a cheap source for the prime movers. Reverse spinning for plying should be doable with a twist in the belt (round belt) if there is no facility for that on the particular motor.
Additionally there is a accessory coupler you could attach to and drive other things like a yarn swift if the machine back is vertically flush with it's mounting board and at the edge of a table.
Additional Material:
8x 1mm x 4mm Neodymium Magnets (For Accessory Coupler & Pulley)
2x 6903 Bearing
1x Steel Rod 10mmx60mm (Alu should work too) with a flat ground into it reducing the height to 8mm
3x M5x35 Screws
3x M5 Locknuts (other nuts will work too)
6x M5 Washers (bottom washers can be bigger if possible)
1x Motor - 1/4inch Pulley and Belt to fit.
(This is mounted under the board in this mod and can have it's placement adjusted)
You would want a motor speed control of some type for whatever you choose.
