This model was based on the Gaskell ICQ model available on the PDS site, rendered using MATLAB R2016a.
The file's names explained:
name_1_x_10_y.stl is 1 : x * 10
y. So _1_6_10_7 is 1:600000000 or one in 60 million.
433 Eros
Eros, compared with
Main Belt asteroids is relatively small, with 34km long, but it's one of the two biggest Near Earth asteroids (NEA), along with Ganymed (not
Ganymede, one of the
Jupiter's moon). At present, Eros is part of the Amor group, which means that it cross the orbit of
Mars, but the NEAs' orbits are unstable. In a few million of years Eros could change its orbit to a lower
Earth crossing one, becoming a member of the Apollo or Aten group. Depending on how close it became to the Earth, it could be a Potentially Hazardous object (PHO), an object capable of intersect and impact on Earth. If it does, it would cause a greater damage than the Chicxulub impactor, the asteroid or comet that triggered the K-T event (in which the non-avian dinosaurs became extincts), since it is 3 to 5 times bigger.
- Type: Near Earth asteroid.
- Orbit: Sun. Amor group.
- Orbital period: 643 d.
- Composition: Silicate rock. S type
- Density: 2.67 g/cm3.
- Dimensions: 34.4 km × 11.2 km × 11.2 km
- Model scale: 1:8x108 (34cm) 1:2x105 (16cm) 1:5x105 (8cm)
