3200 Phaethon
Phaethon is an active asteroid, or rock comet, that is an asteroid that ejects clouds of dust particles like a
comet. It has a very elongated orbit, like a short period comet, which crosses the orbits of all the inner planets (
Mercury,
Venus,
Earth and
Mars). The extreme solar radiation during the perihelion makes the surface broke, expelling regolith and boulders that periodically approach the
Earth, being responsible of the Geminids meteor shower. It could be an exhausted comet (without ice in its surface), or it could be alternatively a deorbited member of the
Pallas family.
