Small cell phone spectrometer that can be easily printed. Made by students from Onehunga High School in the Photon Factory at the University of Auckland.

Instructions

Snap a DVD apart using a blade and cut a piece big enough to cover the angled entrance. Hot glue the lid on top of the main body. Hot glue the DVD grating onto the angled entrance with the grating side facing away from the outside. Using a blade cut a slit 1cm high in aluminium foil and hot glue on the entrance.

Place the grating ontop of your camera and point the slit at a light source.

Tip - Often the camera will over expose you can avoid this by reflecting it off a surface and collecting a spectrum from the scattered light.
