Nuban-themed Hut

A Nuban-themed, multi-turret hut

This model is based primarily on information from the following two articles in National Geographic magazine:

  • February, 1951 "With the Nuba Hillmen of Kordofan", Robin Strachan, pg 249-278

  • November, 1966 "Proud Primitives, the Nuba People", Oskar and Horst Luz pg 672-699

Walls are thicker at the base. Window and doorway edges are not rounded, because I didn't see an easy way to do this.

The roof is not attached to the walls, but rather floating just slightly above. Its shape is meant to model that of a straw roof. The courtyard is round and without a covering, unlike those shown in National Geographic.

Doorways can be either keyhole or arch-shaped. The main entry can be through a turret or the courtyard, or both.

While the number of turrets (or tukls) can be set via a parameter, this model is sized for 5 turrets. The courtyard entry option assumes the number of turrets is odd, and that there is actually space for the entry.

I think it's interesting that if this structure were built real size, using 3D printing techniques to deposit concrete, a single fixed-radius arm is all that's needed for building the turrets -- only azimuthal and height movement would be required. The circular courtyard would require a second radius.

This model was constructed for the purpose of learning about OpenSCAD. I have not tried to print this geometry, as I don't have a 3D printer.
