Hyalodiscopsis plana diatom frustule

This model resembles the frustule of Hyalodiscopsis plana. Hyalodiscopsis plana is a diatom species with astounding features. Diatoms are algae that build up silica structures on their own. Because of their fascinating structures, one can learn much from these creatures. Their interlocking devices may inspire engineers, architects and even fashion designers.

This frustule has interlocking spines all around the cylindrical diatom body. You can show the intertwined spines to everybody in order to show them the amazing und elaborate structures these creatures grow. This interlocking structure is a good example to teach about diatoms. If printed correctly it should be movable after removing support structures. Note that in nature these spines are only a few micrometres big!
