Solar Filter Holder for DSLRs

This is a solar filter I quickly designed and printed for the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. It can slip over any lens 58 mm or smaller in diameter.

This uses one filter from a pair of solar viewing glasses. I cut the cardboard to match the inside diameter of the holder cap.

It's important to use black filament or to spray paint the body of the holder matte black to avoid letting in stray light. I painted it inside and outside before inserting the solar filter material.

I used drops of cyanoacrylate adhesive to hold all the parts in place.

This has been tested and works as well as the professional filter I purchased.

I made this design in case the one I ordered hadn't arrived in time.
