Fastforge Adventurer 5M Spool Roller Printability Remix
Firstly, thanks to dkoiro for making the original, it was needed.
I remixed this for 2 reasons:
The tensile strength in the original is oriented in the wrong direction for the rollers. While it may not be a big deal because we're just talking about spools of filament, I think it's just nice to know it's sturdy. Originally, the upwards print of the rollers made them extremely weak without 50%+ infill, and even then I could still break them quite easily all the way up until 90% infill.
- The upwards print failed, for me, many times with the end of the rollers being the primary culprit. It does look cool, but it just seems a waste of filament and not optimal. Printing the rollers on their face leaves a little bit of a flatish spot, but it has printed for me perfect 3 of 3.
Printing and Construction
I have posted my strength and supports section for Orca in the photos. You could go with less infill as it may be a bit overkill, but I like it. The raft and support settings support the rollers perfectly, and at the same time will pop right off with no trouble when your print is complete. Make sure to set the pattern angle to 135 as it makes the raft and supports print in the optimal direction for not sticking to the pieces. If you want to just separate all the pieces and print the rollers on another bed, as the flat pieces really don't need the support.
Once everything is printed, I highly recommend filing or sanding the end of the rollers and testing them in the end pieces to make sure there is no friction.
To construct the piece:
- Insert one end of the flat rectangle into an end piece.
- Insert all 4 rollers into that same end piece.
- Take the other end piece and, starting on one side, insert two of the rollers.
- bend the long flat piece into its slot on the end piece and you guide the other two rollers into their holes.
When finished the flat piece should just barely stick out on both sides. If you want you can put a little CA glue on each side of the piece in that slot.
