What is Marston mat?
Marston Mat, also known as pierced steel planking (PSP), is a lightweight, portable steel mat originally developed during World War II for quickly constructing temporary airstrips and roads. The distinctive perforated design of Marston Mat provided both strength and drainage, making it effective in challenging environments like jungles and sandy terrains. Invented by the U.S. military in 1941, Marston Mat played a critical role in enabling rapid deployment of airfields across the Pacific Theater during the war. After World War II, surplus Marston Mat found a second life in civilian applications, such as building farm roads, driveways, and temporary construction access paths. Its ease of assembly and durability made Marston Mat a staple of military engineering and logistics, with variants still in use in some modern applications.
