Nickel Weighted 3D-Print-Optimized Geometric Chess Set Pieces
I love the pieces designed by chuckamcknight here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4168753
My own design changes are three fold:
Resizing:
Pieces are resized at approximate "typical" chess piece height (and piece relationship), as follows:
King: 90mm
Queen: 84mm
Bishop: 70mm
Knight: 60mm
Rook: 55mm
Pawn: 50mm
Bases of pawns are 30mmx30mm
Bases of all other pieces are 36mmx36mm
Weighting:
I love the design so much that I just wanted it to feel super heavy and durable. Building on the technique employed on ovalpower's remix (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4236210), I replaced the cavity built for a 10cent euro coin to now accommodate a US nickel. Then I wanted it heavier, thus this double-nickel edition where all pieces, except for pawns which take one nickel, have space to accommodate two nickels. MAKE SURE TO USE YOUR SLICER TO CREATE PAUSES IN THE PRINTING TO INSERT NICKELS.
Bishop Tweak:
I find no fault with the unique bishop design other than wanting a slight homage to the traditional bishop to help my 7-year-old son recognize the piece. I simply added an angled cut on top of the tricorn that is reminiscent of a bishop.
I hope this provides yet another option that builds on the superb original.
