My cable slitter
My cable slitter
I had 3 versions of a cable slitter on Thingiverse.
The original and two revisions.
The original was a remix of

and there are still parts of that in my current design so I am listing this as a remix. Especially around the hinge area. Thank you ZFreaky.
I finally nailed it. This is the best version yet.
Rather than make a fourth revision and have 4 cable slitters on Thingiverse, I decided to delete the original and the two revisions, and post up one final cable slitter. Now I only have one version of a cable slitter on Thingiverse. This one, the best one.
The base is pretty much the same, but I shaved off the square corners so it fits into my hand a little better now. I cleaned it up a little.
I went through a lot of revisions for the top. I covered up most of the razor blade except for the two areas that cut. Safety first.
You control the depth of the cut by hand. Or actually by your thumb. Hold the tool in your hand with the hinge side towards you. Open it up and insert a cable from the rear. Press down slightly with your thumb as you pull the cable through. You can float the razor blade on the jacket but it is still possible to cut too deep and damage the wires inside so you have to pay attention and be careful. It works great and with a little practice and you can develop a feel for it.
You install the razor blade from the end. There are two little slots on the sides of the razor blade. There is a little nub inside the razor blade holder that fits into this slot. There is a 2mm hole at the other end. I shoved in a piece of 1.75 filament and I heated the ends with a lighter and flattened them out a little bit, forming a plastic rivet.
I used a different color filament to make it easier to see in the pictures. If you use the same color as the print then the tiny filament rivet almost disappears.
The filament rivet holds the razor blade very tight in the housing. If you need to replace the razor blade you cut the filament rivet that is holding the razor blade in and slide it out. But it should last for a very long time if you just use it to slit cable jackets.
I used an 8-32 screw ¾” long to hold them together.
I printed these in PLA .2, 25%
