laser survey pole

This is my solution for fixing up my paver backyard that lacked proper drainage. Using this model and an inexpensive laser level I created a runoff path for excess water.

Procedure:
1) Place your laser level at a stable point at a height such that the laser strikes the pole at a useful height. Perhaps on a paver, or on the ground.
2) Ensure the laser has line of sight to all locations where you intend to measure a height using the survey pole model, and your height adjustments will allow the laser to continue to strike the pole.
3) Identify a reference point and mark the pole at the laser strike point. Its numerical measurement is unimportant. All other measures will be relative to this measurement. You can make those measurements with a ruler, eyeball, your thumb or anything else.
4) Relocate (or print multiple) survey pole(s) to a new location after it (or they) have a reference mark.
5) Note the laser strike point i.e. and adjust the substrate to raise or lower the paver (or whatever) to whatever relative offset you need.

Note that the angle of the pole can impact the perceived height both at the reference mark, and subsequent measurements. The laser strike will be higher on one side of the pole than others depending on the pole deviation from vertical.

Note also that the laser must be returned to the same stable position if it is for example taken indoors, or the batteries need to get changed. Your measurements will be as accurate as the positioning of the laser, the poles, and your markings throughout the project.

Additionally, especially for pavers, there are very inexpensive electronic levels that easily fit on a paver and can be used to situate the paver to level or whatever incline you choose reading the digital display.
