Infinity Top
Infinity Top
The 'Inception' top... that spins forever. This design spins for an unusually long time.
It even keeps spinning after it falls over!? Most tops quickly stop when they tip over. This one has so much momentum it keeps spinning while on it's side. It's kind of creepy how this thingie defies the laws of physics.
Engineering
I tried to increase the Angular Moment of Inertia = By making the center hollow, that puts less tipping over weight on top and more stability weight on the bottom disk. The star holes on the top puts more rotating mass on the outer edge. I found I had to add the little ring on top because the ‘Inception’ shape was too hard to grip to give it a good spin.
Printing
I had trouble printing it until I used “normal” PLA. Silk filament did not want to print right.
Turn the model bottom side up and then move the top 1mm below the bed.
Then I printed 15% Hexagon infill with Concentric top and bottom layers.
Add a Raft and make sure the top is fully supported from the bed.
All of this is because the top has to be perfectly balanced or else it will wobble.
I made A LOT of bad prototype tops, this one is kind of cool.
