Sun Microsystems 711 6-bay disk cabinet faceplate
Sun Microsystems 711 6-bay disk cabinet faceplate
Got this from eBay and boy howdy do the shipping companies simply not care anymore :(. Unit came with cracked/shattered faceplate corner.
I printed this with PLA (ABS might be better ?). I also printed it "vertically". Took ~ 23 hours on my BBL X1C but the surfaces came out very nice. Printing face down saves a ton of time but I had issues with the surface looking super rough (support interface, bridging, etc). You may have some better tricks up your sleeve to have your cake and eat it too in this regard... Regardless of how you orient it it will need supports. I used PVA at first, but letting it soak in water made the entire model bow convex. So I went back to breakaway support interface. This took forever to get all the supports removed but no warping at all now.
I used Krylon Fusion satin ivory spray paint. Pretty close match to the original case if not just a hint of too much yellow...
I reused the original clear plastic LED diffuser plate. It fits snug enough that I didn't need any super glue etc. The added thickness from the paint layers helps this as well.
Also this is for the 6-bay. I believe the 12 bay uses the same faceplate but the LEDs (there are more obviously) are a different layout. So you would need to modify this model to fill in and then add the 12-bay LED holes accordingly.
