Type A V-belt Splicing Tool

Intro

My lathe takes a Type A V-belt, but has no provision to get a belt onto the shaft. I designed this tool to help me to cut a scarf joint on a V-belt and glue it back together around the lathe pulley.

Instructions

  1. Print the parts
  2. Stick about five layers of electrical tape onto the angled surfaces of the jig as a spacer
  3. Insert one end of the belt into one half the jig and use a knife to cut at an angle through the belt using the jig + tape as a guide
  4. Repeat for the other end of the belt with the other half of the jig
  5. Use a belt sander to tidy up the angled cuts on the belt
  6. Remove the tape
  7. Use superglue to glue the scarf joint together, using the jig and some clamps to apply even pressure across the joint. Use 6 mm dowel pins to help to maintain alignment.
