Type A V-belt Splicing Tool
Intro
My lathe takes a Type A V-belt, but has no provision to get a belt onto the shaft. I designed this tool to help me to cut a scarf joint on a V-belt and glue it back together around the lathe pulley.
Instructions
- Print the parts
- Stick about five layers of electrical tape onto the angled surfaces of the jig as a spacer
- Insert one end of the belt into one half the jig and use a knife to cut at an angle through the belt using the jig + tape as a guide
- Repeat for the other end of the belt with the other half of the jig
- Use a belt sander to tidy up the angled cuts on the belt
- Remove the tape
- Use superglue to glue the scarf joint together, using the jig and some clamps to apply even pressure across the joint. Use 6 mm dowel pins to help to maintain alignment.
