Federation Healy-class Customs Cutter

Federation Healy-class Customs Cutter

Overview:

Based upon the Gadfly-class test cutter, the Healy-class was designed to pack a great deal of firepower into a very small vessel. The intention was to deploy these ships along contested borders or vulnerable shipping routes, allow other ships (such as the related Seneca-class) to identify threats, and respond quickly. Small raiders could easily be overpowered or encouraged to retreat. Larger threats would be surprised at the fighting capability of the Healy-class.

This ship replaced the Gadfly-class lower hull with an all-new torpedo launcher module. Its reloading/sustained fire rate was almost double that of the outgoing Loknar-class and exceeded even the Excelsior-class. To make up for the lost primary deflector array, the Gadfly-class uses a three-part system (one main deflector dish and two primary sensor modules) in the forward part of its primary hull. Crew accommodations and recreational facilities were removed to create space for the additional hardware. This resulted in a relatively cramped ship, even compared to other cutters in its family.

Initially, a squadron of two Healy-class and three Seneca-class cutters had smaller crew and resource requirements than a single Miranda-class light cruiser. Thirty Healy-class cutters were built between 2321 and 2333. It was discontinued in favor of upgrading the existing Miranda-class fleet, and eventually replaced by the Freedom-class light frigate. The remaining Healy-class ships were relegated to patrol duties within key Federation star systems--three were lost during the Dominion invasion of the Betazoid system. Only a handful are still actively serving in 2382.

Designer’s Notes:

This is another small ship based on my Lost Era “cutter” parts library--all made from heavily modified CaptainMojo components. I was initially going for some kind of a police cutter… and accidentally made a torpedo boat. Not what I intended, but I still like it. It could be used as an early Defiant-type escort or destroyer, but with a much more conventional starship design.
