Polaroid pack camera bellows ribs and lens body interface
These files will help you build a bellows for a Polaroid pack film camera. Print 2 copies of the bellows ribs (.12 layer height if possible) and print the PDF file on 4 letter sized pages. Be sure to go into print options and print it 100% (do not print to fit paper size or it won't be the correct size.) Measure the dotted lines--they should be 8 inches. You will need material for the bellows: a black inside layer and a light proof outer layer. It could be as simple as black paper on the inside and photography paper packaging (the black light proof bag), or material from an old film changing bag, or black broadcloth for the inside and blackout curtain fabric for the outside. The best material would be dedicated bellows material, which has a rubberized coating on the inside. Then follow these steps:
- Cut along the dotted lines on the template pages and tape page 1 and 2 as well as 3 and 4 together.
- Use the templates to cut out the material being used for the bellows.
- Lay the 3D printed ribs down on the inside piece of material and position them so the ribs are interlocking and 2-3mm from each other. The right rib should be around 3/4" from the right edge and the leftmost rib should hang over the end the width of the triangles.
- Using spay adhesive, glue down each rib.
- Glue down the top piece. Notice that it is offset to the left from the bottom piece. Line up the indents on the bottom to position it correctly.
- Wrap the right side around to the left and glue the inside strip to the left side of the fabric so it forms a tube. Line up the triangles so they interlock. This is the most difficult step.
- Glue down the outside fabric ensuring it overlaps around 3/8".
- Shine a flashlight inside the bellows in a dark room to ensure it is light tight.
- Fold the bellows, using a tent fold on the wide ribs (at the wide end), alternating between tent folds on the top/bottom and valley folds on the sides and vice versa.
- Glue the small end to the lens body interface, trimming any extra material. You can either use the 3D printed one or the original metal one.
- Glue the wide end to the metal camera body interface. This cannot be 3D printed as the tabs need to bend into the body. If you don't have an old bellows, you can glue the wide end to the camera.
- Install the bellows onto the camera.
- Post your build! You got this for free, so give back by showing how it's done.
