Vive2GearVrOptician Adaptor (Groden's V4 Vive to GearVR + VROptician Adapter)
This is a Remix of Groden's V4 Vive to Gear VR Lens Adaptor with rings at varying depths for mounting VR Optician Lens adaptor on top. I made these specifically for my Vive COSMOS but should work with vive OG, Vive Pro & Vive Cosmos.
CHOOSING A FILE:
The three files have the rings at 3 different depths for different prescription strengths. The name of the game is getting your face as close to Groden's V4 adaptor as possible to reduce the barrel distortion as much as possible without modifying files. The actual mm number in the name isn't exact to anything it is just a relative dimension I used when trying to find the perfect depth for the thickness of my moderate prescription. It is basically low, medium, high seat depths.
_0mm (LOW): This will basically slam your VR Optician lens right against the GearVR lens and will yield the least amount of barrel distortion for your prescription but could scratch both the lenses over time. Might work without the lenses contacting for people with very mild correction/thin lenses. But I would almost consider sacrificing your correction and use a regular Groden V4 with no VR Optician just to get your face as close as possible.
_1.5mm (MEDIUM): THIS IS WHAT A MAJORITY OF YOU SHOULD PRINT. This was the perfect depth for me to have a slight gap between the lenses and securely mount the VR Optician Lens Adaptor as close to the Gear VR lens as possible without scratching/contacting. My prescriptions are -2.00 (pretty average/normal thickness)
_3mm (HIGH): This was my first iteration that put the ring at the top of the v4 adaptor but this set my VR Optician lenses too far from the GearVR lenses and made quite a bit of contact with my face. However if any of you have a very thick prescription this might be your choice.
DISLAIMERS/TIPS:
1.) Just by nature of this simple design your prescription lens is going to be sitting much further off the goggles than stock. So with people's different face sizes comfort will vary. PERSONALLY I wear a beanie when I play and I found that created just the right amount of cushion and rise off the lens to make a comfortable fit and hit that focus sweet spot. BUT REMEMBER getting the goggles as close to your face as possible is the name of the game to counteract barrel distortion so play around with how you find your fit. I put the back of the head strap down on my head as far as possible to give the goggles a good lift/rise and cause the COSMOS to swing into your face as much as possible (I have always wished the cosmos would CLICK down a little further when swung down).
2.) IPD SETTING! Your stock IPD setting for the vive may not work with this new set up. For instance i used to find 65 the best ipd for me on stock lenses but with the GearVR Mod and my VR Optician Lenses my IPD needed to be 62 (LOWEST). I get fantastic picture with a MINUTE amount of barrel distortion. TOO CLOSE to the face can be TOO CLOSE and thus uncomfortable, so consider that changing your IPD setting (Screw Knob) might close the gap for you on comfort vs image quality!
3.) Groden's v4 Version was critical for barrel distortion on pro and cosmos and I never saw anyone make a prescription version of the v4 and that is why I made this.
4.) A lot of people say if these Gear VR adaptors work with Lens Lab they will work with VR Optician but I have also heard Lens Lab is bigger than VR Optician so I cannot say if mine provided here will work with Lens Lab. But give it a shot and maybe increase the dimension of the ring to 57mm diameter. 56mm is what these are and is perfect for VR Optician.
6.) There is a good chance I may never look at this again. So I hope it helps and hopefully if anyone needs a modification they will at least be able to take my model as a start point.
7.) If any of you decide to scale this entire adaptor for any certain type of fitment, just know if you scale this model as a whole you are going to mess up the Gear VR lens seat depth in relation to the VIVE screens which will fudge all the distortion work GRODEN took into account. The actual geometry of the v4 Adaptor has to be retained, which is what these 3 models do.
