Surprise Yarn Ball Container (with threading & improved)
I liked the model of the yarn ball container from alexhb and TheOddArtisan but adapted it to my needs. I wanted it to print quite larger, so that it can be used as a box for crochet hooks, so the inner space had to be 14cm+. Following adaptions have been made:
- Split the model into 4 parts (glue required but no supports)
- Reshaped the inner, dome-like space at the top, so it can be printed without support
- Reduced the height of the round label-part as it looked a bit off in comparison to a real yarn ball
- Increased the resolution of the outside of the round label-part (had visible planes at the required scale)
- Removed a gap between the thread and the plane it is attached to (you can actually see that on the cover photo, which is an older version of the model)
Known issues
I'm still not satisfied with these two aspects - maybe I dig deeper into that, when I need another instance of the print:
- thread is way too long for it's purpose, 2 revolutions should be enough
- thread is not printed flawless, produces some loose strings (maybe supports could reduce that, I haven't found the cause yet). It works, but I had to work with a cutter to remove some of the strings.
Further notes
- You need to print the yarn-box-bot.stl twice (There used to be two separate files, but they were almost identical, see comments)
- I printed the yarn part with fuzzy skin and it looks great, so the resolution of that part did not matter. Without fuzzy skin, I guess, you can see the low res of the curves of the yarn as well
Changelog / Edits
- 2026-08-18: I've removed the broken yarn-box-top.stl and added an explanation under further notes as of the comment of simplyme.
