Spider Sucker

I. Hate. Spiders.

I live in Australia, home of the huntsman spider. Google "clock spider" for an example of what I'm talking about.

The traditional disposal method is to smack it with a thong, but that involves getting within arm's length of the spider. The word "nope" doesn't even begin to cover it. Huntsmen do not crawl. They gallop, and they can leap further than you'd think. Google "huntsman spider running" if you want to give yourself nightmares. Hitting them with bug spray only makes them run faster.

Vacuuming is a great idea until you have a live spider inside your vacuum cleaner and no way to get it out.

Enter this handy device. It attaches in place of a standard vacuum cleaner head, putting some distance between you and the monster.

Drop the disc into the top end of the tube, then friction fit to the longest vacuum cleaner wand you can find.

As long as the spider's abdomen is smaller than the tube's internal diameter, it will be sucked into the chamber. Pop the cap on while the vacuum is still running, trapping it inside. You can then safely remove the trap from the vacuum wand.

Don't be cruel and leave the spider in there to starve. Either dose it with bug spray or have someone brave set it free at a remote location. If your vacuum cleaner has a reverse function you can probably just blast the spider out the window instead of putting on the cap.

The device is made to accommodate a 35mm vacuum cleaner wand, which is a common size in Australia. The dimensions of the parts are:

  • Inner: 37.3mm

Adjust print size accordingly if you're fortunate enough to have a girthier shaft. I've included a shorter version of the tube so you can test for size without wasting a lot of filament on the full-sized one. The short one is also useful for picking up small objects, as long as they're large enough to be caught by the grate.

The modular design allows every part to be printed in PLA using standard settings, without supports.
